This album is a collection of older songs I wrote after spending time tramping around North America. A couple of them were even written on the side of the road while hitchhiking to the next town. There's a naiveté I hear when I listen back that in some ways I enjoy. That confident ignorance many of us carry when we're coming of age. Maybe that's what the album is about; my younger self trying to interpret his place in a world that he doesn't always resonate with. He is reconciling with the confrontation of harsh realities, but also restlessly searching for freedom in every untamed moment.
I began playing these songs with my brother Justin in the summer of 2023 while we were living in Haines, AK. We started out casually playing around fires on washboard & guitar, and soon enough became a band. We tried recording the album at home, but after several failed attempts and nearly a year of saving every dollar from gigs, we finally made it into the studio. We recorded the album over six consecutive days at Singing Sands in Portland, OR, keeping things stripped down to just drums, guitar, and vocals. No overdubs—just the way we play live.
I want to thank my partner Ariel Rolfe, and Justin's partner Baylee Pearson for the absurd amount of gigs they showed up to, and for being our unofficial camera crew. My friends Kelsey Lovig and Astor Marchesini for always supporting our music. Sam Shinkle for letting us crash in his basement, and practice songs early in the AM for the week. Our incredible audio engineer Callie Day who was wonderful to work with. Guillermo Serrano Amat for putting the album cover together. And everyone else who donated or just showed up to hear us play.
